by the time i got to my mid-20s it dawned on me how much of life i was missing out on, and i realized i had to make some big changes in my life. at that meeting, i was invited to speak and let them know what i thought of the meeting, but i was too nervous to really say anything. they told me i was in a supportive environment, and i didn’t have to worry about bombing a speech. but in time i figured it out- you just practice, get used to being up there, and listen to the speech techniques other club members use. and when i first signed up to be the host for one meeting, i really dreaded it, but after i had done it once, i had an incredible feeling of accomplishment, and each time i did it afterwards, it got easier and easier. i went from barely speaking at meetings, and stammering a lot when i did say anything, to speaking a lot but still sounding very robotic and restrained, to finally becoming a seasoned member who could relax in front of everybody sound very confident, and even cut loose with a few jokes.
i’d imagine there would be a huge increase in confidence from the me of ten years ago to the me of today, and sometimes i forget about things like that. so he joined a club, but was too terrified to get up and say anything. i agree with you about one on one and wish there was something for that. a big part of the pua community are big on approaching girls no matter how nervous you are to get over approach anxiety. to drawing a random object out of a hat and having to make up a story about it. it’s a pick up artist group and it teaches you how to interact with people and females in public settings.
for as long as i can remember i’ve had a huge fear of speaking in public. as a result, i’ve often talked with my supervisor about the anxiety i feel and we’ve discussed strategies to help me cope. the first week, i think we were all quite shell-shocked by the rules and regulations of a toastmaster-run meeting. every time you had to speak, you had to acknowledge the chairman of the meeting, as well as your fellow speechcrafters and toastmasters. during the first few weeks of the course, i half-expected the toastmasters running the course to try and throw us off by changing things up, but that doesn’t seem to be how they do business, for which i am grateful.
while none of my peers doing the course had social anxiety, i soon discovered we were all there for similar reasons, and we had a lot more in common than i ever would have suspected. i think i expected that toastmasters would be full of people who were egotistical and loved the sound of their own voices. over the course of six weeks, i learned a lot about my peers. i never thought i’d be able to do anything like toastmasters, but i’m so proud of myself for giving it a go and for sticking it out. if you have social anxiety, i know it’s going to take you more than a blog post to convince you to give a toastmasters speechcraft course a go. interested in finding out about some of the practical tools i learned as part of the toastmasters course i completed, and how they have helped me to better manage my speech anxiety?
