as a mentor for aspiring and early-stage entrepreneurs, i talk to a fair number who may have a great vision and a strong engineering background, but have a negative interest in the role of public speaking in business. i’m not suggesting that all have to be on the professional speaker circuit to succeed, but let me assure you that public speaking is a required business skill. dr. yager outlines in her book just a few of the reasons why an entrepreneur needs to overcome the fear, and master the art of speaking in public, and i’ve taken the liberty of adding a few occasions from my own business experience: dr. yager asserts that being able to speak in public is one of the five key business skills that can make or break your company, whether you are a new startup or an entrepreneur who’s been around for many years. the other four are: new product development, writing, time management, and sales/marketing. fortunately, the ability to be an effective speaker is based on communication skills that can be taught.

interestingly in a lot of the articles that i read, public speaking wasn’t mentioned as an essential skill. as well, you know that you’ll also potentially have conference speaking gigs (especially if your business is a success) and plenty of media opportunities where the reputation of your business is in your hands. in some cases, you may have hired someone else to do the speaking for you and delegated the opportunity. in other words, by mastering the art of public speaking you’ll see a noticeable improvement in your writing, communication, negotiation, influence, and relationships overall. the important question you should be asking yourself if you want to be even more successful in business is, have you ever been the presenter who tanked?
