but in an age of disconnection â working from home, connecting with the world through a laptop camera â the ability to communicate clearly and effectively has never been more important. my journey in public speaking started in 2010, after i discovered that 74% of americans suffer from speech anxiety. being a great public speaker has nothingâ to do with your personality, with overcoming shyness or learning to act confident. â whether you’re preparing for a tedx talk on leadershipâ or getting ready to tell your boss why you deserve a raise, you must first define two things: then, it’s time to distill your message. an effective method is to use this simple, 15-word sentence:â as a result of my [talk], they will understand [this], and respond by [doing that]. 2. it’s not about you.â every decision you make must demonstrate that you’re talking for your audience’s benefit, not yours. 3. do everything you can to help them hear and understand you. use short words, sentences and paragraphs to express your ideas; physical, concrete and vivid images that appeal to the senses; and active verb choices in place of abstract or passive language.
if your talk relies on heavy data, be sure to explain what that data means â on a human level. people want to know how you think, feel, and believe. if a slide, statistic, joke, or anecdote doesn’t serve your goal, cut it. 6. record yourself or practice in front of real people â or both, if you can. but it’s better to hate yourself before your speech, rather than during (and probably for a long time after) your speech. john bowe is a speech trainer, award-winning journalist, and author of “i have something to say: mastering the art of public speaking in an age of disconnection. *this is an adapted excerpt from “i have something to say: mastering the art of public speaking in an age of disconnection”â â© 2020 by john bowe. published by random house, an imprint of penguin random house llc.
each time i would stand in front of an audience, the ball of tension would start to form deep in my chest, and i knew all was lost. before i get into the details, i want to clarify that i’m not convinced it’s possible to ever completely get over a fear of public speaking. one of the scripts that was running through my mind each time i got up to speak in front of an audience was that i didn’t know enough to be interesting. i had a hunch that the quickest way to get better at speaking in front of an audience was to practice, so i decided to sign up for toastmasters.
while i was practicing public speaking on a weekly basis at toastmasters meetings, i also started to take every speaking opportunity that came my way and prep for it rigorously, no matter how insignificant it might have seemed. i also spent a lot of time watching experts talk about public speaking and body language. about five minutes before the talk, i went into a bathroom stall and proceeded to strike a “high-power pose” for a couple of minutes. in fact, a few weeks ago, someone i used to date came to an event i was speaking at, making what was already a high-stakes situation (there was a panel of judges!)
